The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
